Reliability of urban streets
Abstract
The article deals with measures for improving quality and reliability of urban streets. Reliability is characterised by the properties of streets and roads that ensure traffic of the vehicles without any obstructions and maintenance of technical and operational characteristics within a fixed period. Strength of subfoundations and road foundations has a heavy impact on durability of the road covering, strength and operational properties. Whereas construction materials make the biggest part of the road covering value, constructions that use cheap local materials are the most efficient from the economic standpoint. In order to answer the question about applicability of local materials (sand, dolomites) for road foundations it is necessary to make their tests not only in laboratories but installing sections under investigation on the streets, roads and making their permanent analyses necessary for discovering of their quality and efficiency characteristics. In order to evaluate applicability of local construction materials for installation of main road foundations sections under investigation on Olandų street (city of Vilnius) have been installed where materials purchased from Ukraine have been substituted with local materials. The article covers possibilities of this kind of substitution based on the results of specific investigations.
