Analysis of cycling impact on intermodal trips facilitation in Vilnius
Abstract
The paper investigates factors to be considered for cycling promotion in Vilnius. Based on the need to reduce growth of motorisation and its negative impact on transport, complex and rational recommendations for increase number of bicycle trips are formulated. Currently only 0,2 per cent of all trips are made by bicycles in Vilnius. This is very distant from the EU average (5 per cent). Vilnius transport system has faced difficult challenges of urbanisation during two decades of restored independence. Urban sprawl and suburban growth, as well as decentralised development of business areas had very strong impact on urban transport system leading to growing automobilisation rates. Comprehensive recommendations, considering conditions of relief, climate and technological conditions of Vilnius to integrate bicycle transport into public transport system have been proposed, including cycling as feeder to public transport, bicycle carriage inside the public transport vehicle and analysis of “Bike&Ride” rationale.
