The analysis of Lithuania railway transport performance in sustainable transport context

Abstract
Transport is one of the most important sector of Lithuania's economic. In the past six years the share of transport and warehousing in Lithuania's GDP is growing and reached 15 % in first two quarters of year 2010. According to the European Union policy of Sustainable Development and transport importance for economic, sustainable transport is significant for main goals of EU policy. Railway transport is one of dominant transport mean in Lithuania and takes 40 % share of total transportation turnover, for this reason it is very important to evaluate railway transport performance in order to increase its efficiency, for better evaluation of railway transport performance it is useful to set main railway key performance indicators (KPI).Indicators are measures that give an accurate indication of performance. They are usually expressed in terms of ratios. It is important to measure the right things that give a complete picture of required performance. Politicians underline that indicators should be defined as closely as possible to political decisions. Also should be clear to monitor the implementation of targets and policies. In this article main KPIs for railway transport performance evaluation in the context of sustainable development were set and measured. The evaluation of main railway transport KPIs let to set up the future guidelines of transport policy and comply with the EU policy of Sustainable development.
