Abstract
The very objective to theorize the green transport corridor, that is still under implementation, is virtually an innovative attempt to look at relevant Lithuanian transport policies through the prism of global and regional trends. It is important to theoretically justify the concept of the green corridor and to explain how elements of the new concept might be implemented in practice. On the one hand, the Baltic Sea region has been chosen as a pilot region for transport sector development for the whole European Union (hereinafter – EU) because this region initiates innovative projects in transport sector which, if proved successful, would be consequently transfered to other regions of the European Union. On the other hand, the Baltic Sea region is a proper area for the dissemination of Lithuanian innovations. Namely this region is the place where Lithuania can act as an active initiator, coordinator and policy maker of strategic socioeconomic development projects. Considering the relevance and processes of the European transport policy formation, a comparative approach towards the green corridor (all possible existing definitions in the EU area) is accepted and analysis is provided; elements of the green corridor as well as political guidelines and development prospects are identified.
