Feasibility study of intermodal passenger transport in Lithuania
Abstract
There is no special data on intermodaltransport in Lithuania. However, some combination of separate traffic modes has been traditionally used in the field of matching the schedules of regular buses and trains in regional centres and small towns. Another type of intermodality exists in the form of urban public passenger transport system harmonization, including matching traffic schedules of buses and trolley-buses and the urban public land transport and air and railway transport or coordinating the work of interurban bus terminals. To evaluate the situation, national passenger transportation transmodal market was analysed. The aim was to find nodes of possible multimodality and to evaluate the opportunities that can be realized in the nearest future. A method of experts’ survey has been applied. The evaluation of the present situation in Lithuania by SWOT analysis has shown the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the area of transportation. Since the formation of passenger transport intermodality has not yet started, it is difficult to define the barriers on its way and the elements that should be developed.
