Review of possibilities for combined road-rail transport development in Lithuania

In this article definition and essence of combined transport (CT) are discussed, as well as the drawbacks and possible advantages of this mode of transport. Experience of West European countries in the field of combined transport is shortly reviewed. A conclusion has been made that for the development of CT in Lithuania, cooperation with West European intermodal operators is necessary in order to implement technological, economic and political measures contributing to the attractiveness of combined transport. In this regard, review of main measures is done, and some basic findings concerning possibilities to develop combined rail-road transport in Lithuania are provided.
