Aptariama istorinė tiltų raida nuo seniausių laikų iki dabarties. Laikomasi istorinių laikotarpių tradicinio skirstymo epochomis. Pabrėžiami kiekvieno laikotarpio techniniai ir technologiniai tiltų statybos laimėjimai, minimi garsiausi ir to laikotarpio išlikę tiltai.

The historical develompent of bridges from ancient times till modern days is described in the study. Some best–known bridges of each period are presented with the focus on their high technological innovations. Nowadays the engineers and scientists have created new technologies of bridge building, new materials and methods of accurate calculation of bridge behaviour.
