Abstract

Education oriented to sustainable development is grounded by internal attitude to social and economic development as well as environment. The UNECE Straregy for ESD claims that education equip people with knowledge of and skills in sustainable development, making them more competent and confident and increasing their opportunities for acting for a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature and with concern for social values, gender equity and cultual diversity. The role of universities for implementation of such opportunities is very important and the sustainable development should become an essential tool for harmonization of higher education. It is important to note that all levels of education is main long- term task of the National strategy of sustainable develompent of lithuania, The paper focusses on the role of universities in education oriented to sustainable development and discusses its strong sides and weaknesses as well.
