Analysis of indicators measuring performance of rail-road terminals

Abstract

In the CETP railways was nominated as potential alternative to road-only transport, especially in the case of movements of goods on the long distances. However, railway compared to road transport has one main disadvantage - they do not offer delivery "from door-to-door". As a consequence, additional transshipment operations from railway wagons to trucks or storage area occurs. These operations increase total delivery time and costs because of additional operations and equipment exploitation. All this in turn reduces attractiveness of intermodal rail-road alternative. That's why intermodal rail-road terminals are critical elements in the total freight distribution chain. Provided paper discusses the major elements of terminal and determinants of its performance. This is followed by analysis of the main factors influencing operational efficiency and productivity of intermodal terminal. Finally, there are presented some indicators that are used to evaluate terminal performance rate, as well as some general conclusions on this given topic.
