The dynamics of high technology sectors within global value chains

Abstract
Research background: Contemporary the concept of global value system extensively elaborated by the scientists and applied by practices in the fields of management, economics and politics. Thought the processes of globalization encouraging the interest to investigate global value chain concepts but the opportunities of research in sectoral level is still not extensively explored. Purpose of the article: This article aims to underline the relevance of global value chain approach in recent research and empirically observe the trends of value-added fragmentation and shifts in international markets. The high technology sectors are distinct due to high rate of public support to R&D, and thus as a consequence perception in the added value dissemination, and due to peculiar impact to the arrangement of global value chains. Methods: Contemporary academic literature analysis and synthesis, exploration of descriptive statistics of high technology sectors based on longitudinal World Input-Output data, and comparative investigation of high technology sectors in the Baltic Region countries. Findings & Value added: This article is addressed to evaluate the dynamics of value-added of the high technology sectors and encourage further research in the sectoral level to identify the dynamics of high technology sectors’ performance. The comprehension of international environment trends at the sectoral level may provide insights for the innovation system policies as well as for the development of business strategies.
