Abstract
In this paper theoretical substantiation is discussed to the extent that it is connected with establishing the norm. It is important that a foreign term that comes with a new concept, should get a well-considered and most appropriate equivalent. For the efficient normalisation of terminology a consensus between terminologists and specialists of the particular field is necessary. The first problem is the synonymy between Lithuanian and international terms. Another aspect of synonymy is the unwillingness of specialists to agree what ought to be Lithuanianised and how. The second problem is usage and presentation ofeponymic terms. The third problem is the choice between the variants of specific components of the term. The contradictions between theoretical substantiation and practical usage of terms are predetermined by insufficient agreement about the principles of normalisation of the language, the variation of norms and the strictness of their application, the imbalance between borrowed and native terms, the subjectivity of the person and discordant activities of standardisers of terminology.
