Identification of industrial symbiosis flows in Valmiera region, Latvia

Abstract

The aim of the research is to identify currently existing industrial symbiosis network in Valmiera. The research consists of three main phases: (1) literature review; (2) identification of the current situation based on the analysis of empirical data provided by company representatives and other publicly available sources; (3) assessing and comparing the benefits of existing industrial symbiosis exchanges using four integrated environmental-economic indicators. The main conclusion is that in Valmiera some symbiotic transactions between the industries exist; these transactions are economically and environmentally advantageous and therefore should be developed further.

Tyrimo tikslas yra identifikuoti esamą pramonės simbiozės tinklą Valmieroje. Tyrimas susideda iš trijų pagrindinių fazių: (1) literatūros apžvalgos; (2) esamos padėties identifikavimo, remiantis įmonių atstovų pateiktų ir viešai prieinamuose šaltiniuose esančių empirinių duomenų analize; (3) esamų pramonės simbiozės mainų naudos įvertinimo ir palyginimo naudojant keturis aplinkosauginius-ekonominius indikatorius. Pagrindinė išvada teigia, kad Valmieroje tarp pramonės įmonių egzistuoja simbiotiniai mainai, kurie suteikia ekonominius ir aplinkosauginius privalumus ir todėl jie turi būti toliau plečiami.
