Abstract
Mechanical interaction between the ribbed steel rebar and the surrounding heterogeneous matrix is considered. The paper aims to investigate numerically the contribution of randomness of heterogeneous matrix properties to cracking under centric tension. Concrete is treated as a heterogeneous solid composed of particles embedded into a weaker matrix. A two-dimensional discrete model comprising the geometry of the ribs on the microscale has been developed. This model presents a structural network of spring elements. The spring stiffness reflects the properties of a particles and a homogeneous elastic solid, while microscopic failure criteria are established as the functions of the element size. The random heterogeneity is controlled by normal distribution of random fracture parameters. Crack propagation is considered as a dynamic process due to the failure of individual elements. The contribution of the randomness is shown by applying different standard deviations, and the numerical results are presented.
