Abstract
Questions which stock or bond to select, when to buy and when to sell have plagued investors for a long as there have been ornanized capital markets. Such concerns lie at tha very heart of the mutual fund concept and in large part it explains the growth that mutual funds have experienced. Many investors lack the time, know-how or commitment to manage their own portfolios, so they turn to professional fund managers and simply let them decide which securities to buy and when to sell. The article examines the origin and rapid development of mutual funds, main concepts and essential characteristics, gives various classifications and analyses main advantages for the investors of different mutual funds types.
