After manual one-task and digital, multi-task data processing, cognitive data processing is expected to be the third major generation in the progress of data processing in everyday life but also in industrial process control. Cognitive computing and data processing are based on the implementation of artificial intelligence and advanced signal processing. Smart process control systems are adaptive and interactive, and they may learn. This paper discusses the on-going, gradual change from conventional digital process control systems towards more cognitive systems. The focus is on process industry applications, their practical requirements, and challenges in engineering. This study is a part of a feasibility study concerning the qualitative performance in the specification of process control systems in engineering practices.en_US
