Multilateral partnership management in higher education: the network approach
Abstract
Multilateral partnership is a rapidly spreading interaction mode between HEIs, which is present in international research, education, as well as administrative activities. Despite its great potential, multilateral partnerships are underexploited as an instrument of institutional development. Networking is highly relevant as management tool to institutions actively developing international activities in a limited resource situation, (which stands for most European HEIs), facing the need to balance risks, expand geographical presence, share the resources, and transfer the competences. Networking theory suggests insights how to use multilateral partnerships more effectively. This paper presents the overview of the networking theories and suggestions for HEIs based on empirical research. Network management has been analysed from the partnership portfolio and resource based theory perspective, with the focus on compatibility and complementarity principles. Research results can be applied in consortia, associations, networks, and projects to boost efficiency of a particular institution and might be especially relevant for institutions - latecomers in international educational market, which are developing new forms of international activities and building up international presence.
