Analysis of the use abandoned buildings and brownfields for the design of car parking lots and prognoses of development in Vilnius city

In the 21st century, more than half of inhabitants of cities all around the world have a common problem that related with a deficit of free areas. In the city centers are not enough space for construction the new building, new recreation zone and, of course, for constructing a new parking lot. As it is known, due to the increase in social activity, car ownership rate reaches a high forecasting level. The situation with the lack of space for permanent and temporary storage of vehicles could lead to the traffic safety problem. The “bad parking” is a common problem and includes vehicles parked close to intersections, on the sidewalks or in restricted areas. This has direct effects on the efficiency, safety and aesthetical qualities of the city transport. At the meantime, all cities around the world have faced with another task how to reduce the amount of abandoned buildings, which themselves have a number of factors worsen the overall state of the city. The article contains analyses of parking system in the capital city of Lithuania. Was created the first of its kind the brownfields and abandoned buildings catalogs in Vilnius with the prospect of reconstruction. The article also assesses the possible car parking development model for central territories of the city.
