Abstract
Soil degradation directly affects water and air quality and bio-variety and a soil organic matter is, therefore, one of the most important elements. The organic matter is one of the main accumulators of the solar energy which participates in the fundamental processes of ecosystems, determines the physical properties of soil having an influence of the nutrition regime of plants and is vitally important for plant growth. Having entered the soil ecosystem organic matter may: 1) completely self-mineralise thus enriching the reserves of carbon dioxide and minerals; 2) be used for the nutrition of micro-organisms and assimilate in the microbe biomass; 3) be included in newly formed humus matter, i.e. be converted into humus. The analysis of Neris Regional Park soil covered the total carbon which consists of carbon accumulated in the organic and inorganic form. The investigations determined the contents of the total carbon which will be later analysed through modelling and determination of carbon dioxide emissions and velocities of soil degradation.
